New Super Mario Bros.â„¢ 2 Thwompsâ„¢ Building Set 1

Seven Toys ‘R’ Us Exclusive K’NEX Product Reviews Just In Time For Christmas

K’NEX kindly sent my family some of their Toys “R” Us exclusive toys to review. I’m listing them from the most popular in our home to the least so you can do some Christmas shopping if you have kids between the ages of 5 and 12 or so.

My 7 year old son LOVED the Super Mario Brother sets, New Super Mario Bros. Thwomp Building Set and Super Mario 3D Land Bowser’s Castle Building Set. He put together immediately and brought one in for show and tell. Even the older kids followed us out asking him where he got them. “Oh, mom got them from her work.”

Next up, we loved Beatles Yellow Submarine Building Set because my kids knew the song. They were not into the KISS® Rock Stage Big Rig Building Set, not because there was anything wrong with it, but because we’ve never introduced them to KISS. These are better if they are a part of your family’s music repertoire or if you have a friend who loves The Beatles.

Next we loved the box of 521 Amazing Value Tub Building Set because so many things come with directions these days, but my kids like to free build. This also allowed my youngest to participate more as K’NEX build schematics are not easy for little hands. It does comes with building ideas as well.

We are in the middle of building Typhoon Frenzyâ„¢ Roller Coaster Building Set. It’s for ages 9 and up so it’s definitely a family project. That doesn’t change how excited everyone is for it, but the K’NEX age ranges are true. My son is a strong builder and can easily build by himself beyond his age range in other brands, but he barely could in the 8+ Super Mario sets.

Lastly, the Lincoln Logs® Redfield Ranch were not a big hit, which is sad for our nostalgic selves. My husband and I played with them as kids, but our kids just want to build with everything but them. That’s obviously a personal preference so know the kids you’re buying for. Meanwhile, Scott and I will still have fun build our zombie-proof log cabin schematic.

This would work against the apocalypse. Wait, is the horse bait?

I hope this helps as you’re scouring the shelves at Toys “R” Us.

Disclaimer: I was given these seven toys for free to review and link to this review enters me into a drawing for $100 Toys “R” Us gift card. I agreed to the review because I knew my son would like at least 4 of the toys, and maybe more, and I like doing things for him. If I win the gift card, I will probably give it away since I couldn’t give away any of the toys to y’all.

A Toy Giveaway To Get Your Holidays Started

If you aren’t like me at all, you’re already thinking about the holidays and gifts, and I am going to set my jealous aside to give away a holiday package of three new toys for your family.

First up is the Pinypon Snow Ski Lodge play set ($39.99 – recommended for ages 4+).

If you aren’t familiar with Pinypon, they are small figures that can be mixed and matched.

We received our first one at big toy party, Sweet Suite ’13, in Chicago and fell in love, and this Snow Ski Lodge does not disappoint. In fact, this toy actually exceeded my expectations. I was shocked that the collection came with so much stuff: winter gear, ice skates, a pond, snowmobiles, sled with a track and more. Both my kids had a blast, and I loved that there were boy and girls included in the set.

Pinypon Sledding
The sledding was great fun.

The whole set. It did take awhile to put together because it comes with so much cool stuff so if you have kids who don’t like to build, maybe put it together the night before Christmas.

The second gift is a nanoblock® from their new Insect series. You can chose from the Hercules Beetle, Praying Mantis or Giant Hornet (worth $13.49 – recommended for ages 8+). My son chose the Asian Giant Hornet, which surprised me since we are anti-stinging things right now, but I thought maybe it was a turning point. Sadly, he still doesn’t like bees, hornets or wasps, but at least he still likes to build.

My son is great at building, but we like to do it as a family because it’s more fun together.

The last gift is a three-pack of Mutant Pollutants (recommended for ages 5+), which are squishy, suction-cup creatures. Some glow-in-the-dark and some change colors in water. In the three-pack, you see two mutant pollutants and one is a mystery. I wasn’t sure what my kids were going to do with these guys, but I should never underestimate the power of a toy that doesn’t tell you what to do. The Mutant Pollutants were immediately incorporated as bad guys in the Pinypon Snow Ski Lodge. I also often find them guarding our home.

They aren’t all bad when they’re guarding the house at night and don’t leave marks on the windows.
