Less Popular Than How Awesome My Freaders Are

First of all, freaders is supposed to be friends + readers but it also looks like freaks + readers which might be fine.

I just wanted to let you know how much I bragged on y’all at BlogHer ’12 to other bloggers, brands and anyone who would listen. I cannot believe how hilarious, intelligent and kind our little community is. Thank you for making a place for thoughtful discussion not agreement, political parties or personal rage.

You give me hope for humanity! No really, I put that in my bio for my newest gig: writing monthly at Also, can we say YAY! to this addition to my freelance repertoire? YAY!

In case you didn’t know what Progressive Christianity is.

As a thank you, I wanted to give away a BlogHer swag gift basket, but it would consist of a slingshot monkey, 4 screen clean clothes, and coupons for 18 free yogurt. If I could’ve bottled up my 3 free massages and given you one, I would have, but otherwise, I was a bit of a failure in the swag hag department. Perhaps my adoration and appreciate is enough. {group hug}

When I’m not say thank you, I’m becoming more popular by reading and writing elsewhere.

My Other Hangouts (don’t tell my blog):

Favorite posts I didn’t read, I mean, write:

  • Push: From Reflections of a Grady Doctor, one of the best stories and reminder to trust our instincts and help others even when it is uncomfortable. (thought-provoking)
  • Curiosity Captivates Times Square Crowd: From NPR Morning Edition, a group of people gathered in Time Square to watch the landing on Mars. They started chanting: SCIENCE! SCIENCE! They are probably my people. (interesting)
  • Monisha’s Minute: The Gabby Douglas Hair Controversy…Unwrapped: From Sporty Afros, a look at why Gabby’s hair is commented on so much and the culture of African-American women’s hair. If you don’t know anything about the importance of hair within black American (western?) culture, you need to read this. (important)
  • McKayla Is Not Impressed: A tumblr blog with the first 2012 Olympics meme: McKayla Marony’s unimpressed look on impressive events. (funny)

Alex Iwashyna

Alex Iwashyna went from a B.A. in philosophy to an M.D. to a SAHM, poet and writer by 30. She spends most of her writing time on, a humor blog (except when it's serious) about her husband fighting zombies, awkward attempts at friendship, and dancing like everyone is watching. She also has a soft spot for culture, politics, and rude Southern people who offend her Yankee sensibilities. She parents 2 elementary-aged children, 1 foster baby, 3 cats, and 1 puppy, who are all Southern but not rude. Yet.

  1. I had never heard of Progressive Christianity until today and I am really impressed! I love the idea of it and that there are so many open minded people who actually stand up for what they believe and support others that are normally shunned.
    Well done!

  2. Oh man. I really, really like what those eight points outline. A lot.

Also, (re: hair in black American culture) have you ever seen Chris Rock’s documentary “Good Hair.” It’s so very interesting. I recommend.

  3. Congrats on your new gig!! I’m just beginning to scratch the surface of free lance (starting with advertising through Blogher.) I’m hoping my little blog can be as cool as your big blog one day! 🙂

    1. Thank you. And congrats on being in the BlogHer ad network. I love it. Don’t hesitate to email me with questions on pitching, money and/or any other freelance stuff. xo

  4. I think I might be a progressive Christian. I’ve never found a label that fit. The closest church I can find to reflect my values is the Unitarian church. I think I’ll check out the website at the bottom of your contribution.

    What a cool writing gig!
