Stop Watching That Sequel!

Iron Man without A Head photo
I couldn't find Iron Man's head so I added mine.

Me: Um, what are you doing?

Scott: Watching a movie.

Me: Is that Iron Man 2?

Scott: Um, yes it is.

Me: Have you seen the first Iron Man?

Scott: No.

Scott: Netflix Instant doesn’t have the first Iron Man.

Me: Well then, it’s settled! You can’t watch Iron Man 2.

{Scott clicks play}

Me: Wait!

{Scott clicks pause}

Me: This goes against everything that is good and right in the world. You have to stop. Redbox probably has Iron Man. I’ll even go get it!

Scott: Forget it. I’ll just watch something else.

PS. We rented Iron Man the next day and have now seen both in the proper order. I’m not really “a catch” as much as “a freak,” but seriously, who watches the sequel first?

Alex Iwashyna went from a B.A. in philosophy to an M.D. to a SAHM, poet and writer by 30. She spends most of her writing time on, a humor blog (except when it's serious) about her husband fighting zombies, awkward attempts at friendship, and dancing like everyone is watching. She also has a soft spot for culture, politics, and rude Southern people who offend her Yankee sensibilities. She parents 2 elementary-aged children, 1 foster baby, 3 cats, and 1 puppy, who are all Southern but not rude. Yet.

  1. The real question is “who cares?” 😉 I may have to side with Scott on this one, my dear. I’m not blacklisted now, am I? lol

  2. Only Star Wars fans watch the sequel first, and that’s only because George Lucas forced them to do it that way. Otherwise, it’s unnatural and can not be condoned.

  3. I totally agree. I hate watching things out of order and I hate watching parts of things too. It drives me crazy when people start watching a movie partway through!

    Also, I’m a little jealous because the one day Megan and I wanted to watch Iron Man 2 (we’d already seen Iron Man), Netflix wouldn’t play it even though it showed up on instant, and pay-per-view wanted $16 for it! We had to go find a video rental machine!

  4. I don’t know that I’m for or against it, but for myself I know that it makes more sense to watch them in order. There is always some detail that really requires the first one to be first. Although most sequels disappoint me greatly. Only a few have lived up to the awesomeness of the first movie.

  5. I have a strict personal operating rule-thing that I can NOT watch a movie that I’ve never seen before and start it halfway through. I HAVE to start at the beginning.

    T will start a new-to-him movie not at the beginning and it boggles my mind. I mean, how do you even know what’s happening? What if someone critical croaked? HE WOULDN’T KNOW!

  6. Watching the sequel first is definitely against the rules! As is starting a movie you have never seen in the middle (which my husband is also guilty of doing).

  7. No. No. No. No. You can not watch the sequel before you watch the first movie. It just is NOT DONE. Thank God you stopped your husband before something horrible happend.
