I Ask: What Color Blue Should I Dye My Hair?

Over a year ago, I did a vlog the night before I started dyeing my gray hairs. I was only 31 years old and I had enough hairs to build a cuddly polar bear.

Except I like my natural hair color, but dying does not lead to natural color. My hair just kept looking darker and darker, and I felt older and paler like a vampire without the sparkle or the blood-thirst or the paycheck.

So I stopped dyeing and my gray polar bear on my head said RWAOR! I didn’t mind for awhile because I got carded at the Ben Folds concert when all the other women were being let in for looking over 21.

But I’ve had it.  The party of elderly hairs on my head needs to end.

However, I’ve decided to do highlights instead of dyeing my entire head.

Blue highlights.

Yup. BLUE.

Harkening back to my days of purple hair and multiple ear piercings without all the angst and platform shoes.

I had the hair consult so now I just need to order my favorite shade of blue from Special Effects.

That’s where you come in. Please, help me pick!  Also, if you hate blue, I’m open to purple-y colors.

Here are my choices from Special Effects:

Or if you have found another hair dye that comes in blue and stays for awhile, please recommend it.

So I ask: What color blue should I dye my hair?

Thanks for the suggestions except for all of you who didn’t mention any blues at all. I went with Fish Bowl Blue and here’s a photo of the results.

  1. I have had fun with Special Effects hair dye. Wildflower is a beautiful blue purple color. Fish bowl is not as bright as it looks. And blue mayhem is always fun. Think about if you want blue with reddish hues or greenish hues. Sadly blue seems to fade the fastest out of all the colors. The dyes just don’t hold up like they used to. Having 2 blues in your hair might be fun, a darker and a lighter. 🙂

    1. Ooh, wildflower might be the best of both worlds.
My hairdresser thought special effects would stay in the best over other brands and she said that even as it faded, it continued to look pretty. When you used it did you just call them to order or does a store near you carry then?

      1. I ordered them from Amazon and did it myself. Having a hairdresser do it will be easier because they can see the top of your head. Just remember that when you shampoo it, you’ll turn your tub blue. The purples do stay longer then most. Manic panic does actually rinse out faster. Special Effects does seem to last a bit longer. I do love that wildflower. It is such a lovely color.

  2. You have dark hair, so a light blue would look neat! I vote Fish Bowl.

FWIW, I did a streak of blue in my bangs a few years ago. I found the initial dye (Special Effects, Blue Mayhem I think?) washed out awfully quickly, and when I re-dyed at home it did the same. However, when I dyed a different shade of blue (Blue Haired Freak?) over the first it stuck better. My completely anecdotal hypothesis is that changing shades helps color retention — I think this may have worked for my friend who went with purple, too.

    1. Interesting. Special effects came recommended by my hairdresser for lasting longer and fading in a pretty way, but maybe I’ll pick 2 shades and alternate.
I was leaning towards fish bowl as well.

      1. I think a PP may be right about blues in particular fading faster. It does fade nicely though! And once you get the initial bleach, it isn’t too complicated to touch up by yourself or with a friend to refresh or try new colors.

    1. Have you used both? I hadn’t heard of Punky Colour, but some of their colors are beautiful. My hairdresser recommended it because she thought it didn’t fade as fast but more so, because as it faded, it still looked pretty. But I’m totally open to suggestions!

      1. We’ve only used Punky. It lasted quite a while on bleached hair, and was pretty as it washed out. The initial colours were bold and bright, which I enjoyed.

  3. Blue mayhem or wildflower. I also love pimpin purple, but maybe it’s a bit dark? Although a bazillion years ago, my hair was burgundy wine colored (more or less). Loved that.

  4. My eye immediately went to wildflower. However, I would choose blue-haired freak just so I could say “blue haired freak” when someone asked me what color blue I put in my hair. 🙂

  5. I don’t believe I could pass up the opportunity to have the word “Mayhem” associated with my hair.

So Blue Mayhem gets my vote.

Blue Velvet or Wildflower would have been my first choice if either one had had more hints of destruction and/or chaos in the name…
