Art Appreciation

My son is bringing home beautiful art work from his preschool.  I’m surprised because his interest in crafts has been minimal at best. (and of course all the fun-projects-with-your-kids-sites ALWAYS suggest crafts, which at our home often ends with paper everywhere and no actual art in site.  maybe some ingestion of play dough.  yum.)

He brings home this picture last week:

Me: Oh E!  It’s so beautiful!  You must LOVE blue!  Do you LOVE blue?

E: Um, it’s North and South America, Mama.

Me: OH!

This week E brings home a new picture:

Me: Oh E. It’s beautiful! (I carefully ask) What is it?

E: It’s GREEN, Mama. (He may even have rolled his eyes.)

No, I did not take art appreciation in college.  And now E knows, too.

Alex Iwashyna went from a B.A. in philosophy to an M.D. to a SAHM, poet and writer by 30. She spends most of her writing time on LateEnough.com, a humor blog (except when it's serious) about her husband fighting zombies, awkward attempts at friendship, and dancing like everyone is watching. She also has a soft spot for culture, politics, and rude Southern people who offend her Yankee sensibilities. She parents 2 elementary-aged children, 1 foster baby, 3 cats, and 1 puppy, who are all Southern but not rude. Yet.

  1. that's *hilarious*. i love your REALmomness. it makes me feel like i'm somewhat ok at parenting. most blogs make me feel like i suck.

his blue painting is SO funny. thank you for posting it instead of bragging about your kids. 😉

  2. Eating playdough is cool and you will totally turnout normal. I had a slight rehab salt lick addiction to playdough when I was younger that I don't talk about.
I would LOVE to brag about Riley's fingerpainting but he doesn't like to get his hands messy…

  3. My then four-year-old son brought a colorful “painting” home from daycare. I exclaimed over the painting's beauty, then asked what it was. He kind of shrugged his shoulders and said it was paint.
